Community Farmers Markets (CFM) Announces Food Pantry Partnership in MARTA stations

Atlanta, GA: Community Farmers Markets (CFM) and Fresh MARTA Market (FMM) are partnering with Urban Recipe, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, to distribute free shelf-stable food items to customers during its inaugural winter market, beginning Friday, February 5, 2021. Both the winter market and the food pantry are central to the goal of Fresh MARTA Market, which is to cultivate food security by providing access points for affordable, healthy food. Fresh MARTA Markets are located at: West End, Five Points, Bankhead, College Park, and H.E. Holmes MARTA stations.

Since 2015, CFM has partnered with MARTA to host pop-up market stands at stations in neighborhoods with limited access to groceries, selling fresh produce to commuters in an effort to make farm-fresh food more accessible and convenient. Now, due to the partnership with Urban Recipe, Fresh MARTA Market customers will also be able to choose additional shelf-stable items, including rice, oats, pasta, and canned foods, free of charge, to supplement their purchase of fresh produce.

Community Farmers Markets is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Since 2011, CFM has envisioned a future in which Atlanta will be home to a diverse, interconnected food system that promotes healthy food, sustainable ecosystems, and living wage working conditions. The mission of Community Farmers Markets is to develop a local food infrastructure for long term sustainability and meaningful community impact.

For 28 years, Urban Recipe’s food cooperatives have provided consistent food to people in need, doing so in an environment where recipients build relationships with one another and gain ownership by participating in the process. Inspired by cooperative principles, the hallmark of the program has been a unique level of member engagement and participation. The mission of Urban Recipe is to partner with members and supporters in creating food security, building community, and providing a platform for personal development while affirming dignity.
