Fall at Caribe United Farm

This September, Community Farmers Markets staff (including photojournalist Jenna Shea Mobley) traveled up to Crawford, Georgia to visit the new Caribe United Farm. Farmers Tamita and Gabriel hail from Jamaica and Puerto Rico, respectively. They met in Jamaica when Gabriel was studying abroad, and after several years of keeping in touch across several countries, they were engaged and married.

Tamita grew up rooted in agriculture and Gabriel “soon [fell] in love with the richness of this living and dreamt from then on of owning his own Caribbean style farm.” Using her knowledge and his love of science, they began to raise chickens for consumption. More and more folks from the diaspora put in orders for their favored stewable chickens. The business has grown. Gabriel now serves on the Athens Farmers Market board and Tamita teaches Spanish online.

They raise all sorts of poultry: chicken, duck, turkey, guineafowl, and roosters. They also have a Berkshire hog and hope to grow into that market some day. Says market manager Andrea: ” You can tell the animals really love them as they approached the gate as we walked up to them, and the dogs hopped in Gabriel’s arms.”

The mission of Caribe United Farm? “Our mission is simply to produce the very best at achievable and affordable prices to all, while embracing, promoting and empowering the culture and economic progress of underrepresented communities.” You can help them grow their goals financially through their GoFundMe fundraiser. You can find their fresh poultry online here; free local delivery to the Athens area, and Home Delivery to Atlanta Area, additional $15 Delivery Fee with purchase of $85.00 or more.

Caribe United Farm can also be found at Decatur Farmers Market on a rotating basis, and the Grant Park Farmers Market. Sign up for our newsletters (at the bottom of any page) for a weekly updated vendor list. Welcome Caribe United!
