Outreach Spotlight: June at the First School

We loved spending time with the preschoolers and campers at the First School, housed at the First Baptists Church of Decatur.

We started with an activity about the four seasons – sorting pictures into categories spring, fall, summer, and winter. The pictures showed what the people, animals, plant, and weather does in each of the seasons.

Our older campers got some exercise and did this activity as a relay race across the rec room!

Then, we discussed how the foods we grow and eat locally in Georgia change throughout the seasons and sang this song:

“Peaches in the summertime, apples in the fall.

The fruits of the seasons, I love them all.”

Lastly, everyone got a taste test of a locally-grown peach! We used adjectives to describe the taste and texture then each child voted on if they loved it, liked it, or didn’t care for it. We analyzed the data after we collected it by estimating the number in each category, counting together, then comparing the numbers.

All of the children were invited to come to the market that afternoon when their caregivers picked them up to receive a free peach and 25 families came to see us that day!
