The Treat Yo’Shelf General Store came to be in the summer of 2020 when the Community Farmers Markets reopened. We’d started and ran “ShopCFM”, an online marketplace with weekly socially-distanced pick-ups in our farmers market locations. As customer demand for in-person farmers markets grew, we transitioned to reopening the farmers markets with many COVID-19 safety measures. With limited space due to increased vendor spacing, we focused on the farmers and growers in our community. Thus we could not host many or any of our artisan food vendors. The General Store was born out of a need to fill the gap of local food and products, while respecting social distancing. The spirit of ShopCFM lived on as we invited vendors across the CFM family to participate.
In September 2020 the General Store “soft” launched at Community Farmers Markets’ flagship market in East Atlanta Village. We were enthusiastically welcomed by the community and successfully shared products from local vendors until the market closed for the season. The General Store then shifted to the Grant Park Farmers Market and was met with more joy and excitement from locavores in that neighborhood!
The benefits of the General Store reach both customers and vendors. Beloved and new products are available for customers regardless of a vendor’s schedule. Plus, we are able to provide a passive income to vendors while respecting social distancing, keeping personnel to a minimum during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are very excited for the full 2021 season in April and can be found at the Oakhurst and Grant Park Winter Farmers Markets (see below for schedule and participating vendors). Bringing joy to the community through access to favorite and new items has been such a pleasure. Treat Yo’Shelf!
