This April and May we will be visiting the after school club at the Decatur YMCA to host seasonal taste tests and activities for students. Our first visit, we learned about strawberries. We read “The First Strawberries: A Cherokee Story” by Joseph Bruchac…
Then, we learned how to slice our own strawberries with the “claw and saw” method moving “low and slow.”
The kids also made their own whipped cream by shaking up heavy whipping cream in a jar.
Then, they drew a picture of their strawberry showing how it grows and the plant parts.
We finished up with a song we wrote about strawberries – complete with sign language of key words!
“I love that strawberry taste,
I love that strawberry taste,
Out on the farm where the berries were grown,
The rain came down and the sun, it shown,
I love that strawberry taste.”
The students at the YMCA visited our market the next day and then if they come back with their parents later in the month, their family will receive a $5 token to spend at market!
